The importance of a scientific institution and the impact of its activities cannot be expressed in a clearer and more concise way than by a complete listing of its publications. However, the informative value of such an index goes beyond the simple task of bibliographically listing the works as completely as possible. Thus the publications list of the Austrian Historical Institute in Rome – no less than 541 titles up to and including 1998 – also reads like a short summary of its history since its foundation nearly 120 years ago. The many fields of the scientific items listed, including standard works in the fields of history, archaeology and the history of art, mirror not only the inter-disciplinary aims of the Historical Institute, but also the unending number of scientific themes originating in Rome. At the same time the register shows not only the achievements of the Institute and its important role in the service of Austrian science, but also provides an important bibliographical instrument that will be of considerable service to a broad public if only because of the varied scientific fields it comprises.
